City of Los Angeles

City of Los Angeles

The National Society of Black Engineers honors the exemplary commitment to inclusion and diversity of the City of Los Angeles, California. On June 19, 2020, Eric Garcetti, then mayor of the city, signed Executive Directive No. 27, Racial Equity in City Government, to study and promote racial equity in City departments. The order required the establishment of a racial equity officer, racial equity committee and racial equity plan for each department. Targeted working groups grew out of the various committees, studies and racial equity plans, and provided support for the established Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Engineering Recruitment Committee, which was created in 2017 to help address the underrepresentation of African Americans within the City’s engineering classifications.
